Rocky Mountain National Park is one of those must see places while in Colorado. Just northwest of Denver, this ride will take you on the highest continually paved road in America, which is only open in the summer..
While doing this ride it's a good idea to take along warm clothes even in the middle of summer. Also plan on riding the higher parts of this ride early in the day to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms. While you can do this loop in a day, it would be easier to plan a couple of days so you can enjoy more of the sights.
To start your ride, head west on I-70 to Idaho Springs where you'll catch Hwy. 119 north towards Black Hawk, which is an old mining town that now has limited stakes gambling. Continue on Hwy. 119 through the little town of Rollinsville toward the town of Nederlands where you'll take Hwy. 72 north through the town of Ward.
In the town of Raymond, you'll take Hwy. 7 north toward Estes Park.
Estes Park is a great place to visit with it's many places to dine and shop. It is also the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Take Hwy. 36 to the park entrance, where you'll have to pay a fee. From there you'll ride on Hwy. 34 through the park.
As you come out of the park on the west side, you'll drop down into the Grand Valley, where you'll ride along Grand Lake until you get to the intersection with Hwy. 40. At this point, you could take Hwy. 40 back to I-70 then Denver for the shorter loop. Or you can take Hwy. 40 west, to the intersection with 125 north, toward the town of Rand, and into the beautiful North Park area. Stay on Hwy. 125 into the town of Walden.
While in Walden, stop in at the River Rock Café' and Antlers Lodge for a bite to eat where you'll get 10% off your food, drink and lodging with your coupon. This is one of our favorite places to stay with it's king size beds, marble bathrooms, hand huned logs and lavish lounge.
From Walden take the scenic Hwy. 14 east towards Fort Collins, where you'll take I-70 back to Denver. |
