This loop is just outside of Denver and is an easy day ride. It does go up into the higher elevations, so remember to take your leathers along with gloves and a hat. It's also good to ride the higher areas earlier in the day to avoid the afternoon rain showers.
As you ride into the foothills on Hwy 285 south, you'll pass through the mountain towns of Aspen Park and Conifer. Stay on Hwy. 285 and you'll go down Crow Hill, which is a long hill that takes you into the town of Bailey.
(Note: pay attention to your speed in this area as it is heavily patrolled)
Out of Bailey you'll enjoy the ride through the canyon and the Platte River, as it runs beside you. As you head towards the town of Grant, watch for big horn sheep, this is a favorite grazing area for them. There are also many mule deer and elk in this area, along with coyotes, bear, and mountain lion.
At the end of the canyon you'll start up Kenosha Pass. As you go over the top, and just past the campgrounds,
look for a pull off to the left, and take in the grandeur of the South Park Valley.
At ten thousand feet in elevation, and surrounded by snow capped mountains, it's an impressive sight.
Riding through the park, you'll see many cattle ranches, with the occasional herd of elk and antelope. Stop in the little town of Como and check out the old Round House, which was part of the old railroad system.
Back on Hwy. 285 SW, you'll travel over Red Hill Pass, and into the town of Fairplay. While in Fairplay, use your coupons at the Fairplay Hotel or The Park Bar, and let them know you heard about them on our website.
Just outside of Fairplay on Hwy. 285, you'll take Hwy. 9 south toward Hartzel, and watch for Buffalo grazing in the pastures along the way.
At the intersection of Hwy. 24, take a left and travel through the little town of Hartzel. Stay on Hwy. 24 east, and you'll ride over Wilkerson Pass and out of South Park.
As you ride into the town of Florissant, known for it's fossils of giant redwood trees, take the road south toward the little gambling town of Cripple Creek. Mining is how this little town got it's start, but now you can have fun with
some limited stakes gambling, or ride the historic railroad.
Leaving town, take Hwy. 67 north, toward the town of Divide and make a right on Hwy. 24 east, toward Woodland Park.
At the light in Woodland Park, make a left onto Hwy. 126. This ride will take you through where in 2002 Colorado had one of it 's worst forest fires in history, called the Hayman Fire.
Just past Deckers, the road becomes very windy, with some extremely tight turns. Also if there has been recent rain there might be sand in spots. So be careful in that area .
The next town you come to is Pine, before you start going up in elevation to the intersection with Hwy 285. At this point make a right and it's just an easy ride back to Denver.
